SEEKING A RELATIVE

From Stella Vicanovic, (No City Provided,) IOWA, USA:

I want to know if Ms. Vicanovic is related to me. My name is Stella Vicanovic and my parents were born in Yugoslavia. They moved to the USA in 1970. I was born in Minnesota and I am 29 years old. I currently live in Iowa. My father's name is Konstantin Vicanovic who I haven't seen in 22 years. I believe he is in Yugoslavia somewhere. Do you know anything?

Thank you,
Stella

DRAGANA VICANOVIC RESPONDS: Dear Rod,

This is very interesting and quite unexpected letter indeed! So, here is my answer.

Dear Stella,

Vicanovic is my husband's family name and yes, there is a great possibility that you two are related. In Belgrade's telephone book there are 6 Vicanovic families, and they are all related. This is rather rare family name.

Actually, as far as I know, all the Vicanovics have the same roots. The entire family were Serbs, originating from Monte Negro. Running away from the Turkish torture some 250 years ago, the whole Vicanovic tribe at first went to Voivodina which was at that time an annexed province of the Austrian empire, but those highlanders didn't liked plains without hills and mountains. So, they come to Serbia and populated the villages in the Loznica region at the bank of river Drina from where the Turks were already expelled.

Their descendants departed all over Yugoslavia and the world. We know that some Vicanovics are living in the USA and Great Britain and the former Yugoslav republics like Bosnia, for instance. The majority are here in Serbia. I've asked my husband, but the name Konstantin is not familiar to him, although I'll ask his mother and the rest of the family. If your father is in Yugoslavia, there is a great chance that we can find him. So, if you want, we'll give it a try.

Thanks for contacting us, and we both wish you and your family a happy New Year.

Dragana

And You Think What?...

From Raoul T., (No City Provided,) CA, USA:

Things that bother you this month?

"2. That the media hype is now that the Y2K bugwas defeated. I've seen a couple of stories which suggest it's just incubating."

Unfortunately once again without a degree my observances are taken as balderdash. Perhaps you are noticing what I have been saying for a year. Why all of the sudden are all western politicians acting "good" to and attempting programs for the GLOBAL SOUTH?

Big business knows, the grain of sand ripple of our small inconveniences brings catostrophic consequences come this winter in southern hemisphere. If your bankcard was invlid for 24 hrs here, how long will the account of a whole business, supporting 38 family employees in brazil be unable to pay wage checks? And the list goes on.

You are well as allways.
Raoul

SUBJECT: Issue # 198

I love the whole thing. Very now and very pow. Yep, I love it. Every word. I look forward to it and it saves me. Again.

Thanks, Rod

From John M., Dallas, TX, USA:

I must applaud the Vivian piece. This was right on the mark.

I see alot of what Steve mentions in my own children (dear God!). Probably the only thing that will keep the economy going is that it in the post industrial age it will not take alot of people doing 'real work' to make things run. All the rest will be computerized. Where once machines made the the work of many capable by one, so to will the computer make the intelligence of one be available to the many. The rest shall become savants to the maw of consumerism.

Thank God I will be compost by 2030.

SUBJECT: My Glass House Jan.16(17?)

Dear Rod:

Simply so you don't revel in your pain too much,i.e. "here pal, this is a contender for "Most Fucked Life Events REvealed ON The 'Net". "

Me and Nancy got together for all the wrong reasons: basically my buddy was dating her sister and we wanted a bag of weed and "Nancy" had the connection. She was also five years older than me, had a wheels and could buy(drinking age 21, I was 18). By our third date we were screwing in the car and everywhere else. I graduated from high school half a year early, so I could "get on with my life" and more importantly, move in with Nancy. Shortly after that she got pregnant - we went the abortion route. Then she got pregnant again:then we got married. This was o.k., but basically we were just some hippy parents - our life revolved around getting high, going to work, spending every penny we had so we could continue living check-to-check.

Four years later my second son was born. Meanwhile, I had blossomed from a slim trim 150(@6'1") to a healthy 280+. I hit a bottom point when I was arrested for impaired driving in 1984. I quit getting high and drinking, then I started working out,got down to 180-ish. Meanwhile, Nancy spiralled away from me, spending more & more time with another mother down the street - sharing Valiums, sharing fifths - I'd come home and she would be passed out with the door locked so the kids would have to stay in. I couldn't get her to try counselling, so in 1988 I filed for divorce and moved out with my sons. She didn't even fight for the custody - thought I would be begging her to take over real soon. She visited for a few months on her alternating weekends, then she started missing visits, then it became months between telephone calls. She hasn't seen her sons, now 19 and 15, since 1990. Last year I recieved a call from a woman who had befriended a "street person" who would talk to her while she was outside on a cigerrette break. It was my ex-wife, she was filthy, sleeping generally under one of the overpasses or in dumpsters, abandonded houses, etc. and had become a panhandling chronic alcoholic. She had been raped and beaten up by a group of "street men" and they had taken her shoes. This was November - this is in Detroit. I went to the women Betty's house, so we could put Nancy on a plance to Florida where her mother lived. Through four hours of being with Betty and Nancy(between the car ride to the airport, checking in, waiting around), Nancy never figured out who I was(she had lost her glasses and we had to let her continue drinking on a bottle of wine up until we went into the airport); however, she did say one thing that really tore me up," you know Betty, your friend is so nice to bring us here, he looks alot like my ex-husband. Yeah, this is something Eddy would have done if I would have called him." I was o.k. after (a) a short cry in the bathroom;and(b) getting home and having my second wife tell me I had done the right thing helping her out. In February 1999,Nancy's mom called to tell me that Nancy had taken to sleeping in the park with the homeless people, and that at Nancy's request, mom bought her a one-way bus ticket to Detroit. End of my True Life Story.

On a different note, I included this poem and these thoughts on my website, in honor of this day on which we celebrate the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr.'s. Understand, every few years me and Doctor King share honors; my b-day is January 17,1960. {Start} HEAVEN

~Langston Hughes~

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. was a visionary, a man with a dream. His dream was of a world where children were unafraid, all people were at peace with one another and even the simplest of beings, the "stone" was greeted with friendship and respect. Dr. King's messages and mission still provides a point of focus and grace for millions worldwide. He was taken from us much too soon, but we rejoice that he was born to be with us. {Finis}

As a "mixed-race" person(black, european, native american), with even more "mixed" children(all above + mexican, irish and Hawaiian) I was slightly saddened by your take on Dr. King's demise - all of it is factual;however, I haven't found a good productive use for anger over the distant past(i.e. before my lifetime). I personally try to view the events of the past as(a) a lot of really stupid shit that was done by really stupid people, for really stupid reasons;and(b) not likely to be repeated. The last line of your article did highlight something I do believe is still relevant: eternal vigilance against injustice and continueing all of the GOOD FIGHTS that remain in this world.

Peace and love,

Subject: Things that bother me

Rod,

1. When I have to wait for the next installment on an interesting story.
2. When I read one ad which points me to two others on the net.
3. You getting Martin Luther King Holiday and our students take the day in school to learn as much as they can about him, his fight for justice and the civil rights movement.
4. People who don't return messages left on the voice mail or machines.

I think that's enough for now. Rudell in Bermuda

From Brett H., Santa Monica, CA, USA:

Why do you attack Seth Mydans reporting for the NY Times? His writing is excellent. Did you see his piece from Fiji on the millennium sunrise in the NYT 1/1/00??

ROD RESPONDS: Brett, sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't mean to imply either that Seth isn't a good writer or that *all* of his reporting is bad. What I meant to criticize was *only* his coverage of the Cambodian elections.

As far as I was concerned, Mr. Mydans was only parroting Steve Solarz and my reporting produced a diametrically opposed to conclusion to Solarz's views.

"Love is a low down aching heart disease. Like consumption, killing me by degrees." --- Robert Johnson

Quite a harrowing story. Y'know, what I've found out is that it's not the memory of the woman (or man) that is so hard to overcome but, rather, the memory of all the stupid shit we put up during the relationship. Peggy was a soul killer, Rod. A soul killer!!

Music Help Sought From Bob Powers

From Leonard, (No City Provided,) USA:

Hello,

i was wondering if you could help me. when i was a kid, back in the late 60's or early 70's, my brother and i had a record, a 45, that was a short story. it was something along the lines of," tiki tik timbo". it was a story about a kid who had a very long name,(tiki tiki timbo no sorembo chati bati roochi pit pery pimbo), and something about he has fallen into a well. i remember listening to this record a lot when we were kids, but i cant find anything about it anywhere. would you know anything about this, or could you please let me know if you know of someone who would ?

thank you very much for you time

leonard....

ROD RESPONDS: Leonard,

Thanks for visiting G21 and for writing. I have to admit this missive gave me a huge chuckle! (Is this like "abuna ma tata?")

What an interesting query for a Web magazine!

Of course I'm passing this along to our Music Writer, the inimitable Bob Powers, who has a MASSIVE music collection and memory of music history. Besides, he has multiple grandchildren. That would indicate to me that he probably knows this song by heart. ;=)

I'm sure Bob will be in touch with you.

BOB POWERS COMES THROUGH AGAIN!: Dear G21 reader, › With the assistance of a trusted musician who also knows his way around the Web, I think I may have solved the puzzle of the song you wanted. My memory was jogged by the fact that Donovan recorded it, so I'm fairly certain this is the song you were talking about. › Check this URL: http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=225862875/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/ArtistID=DONOVAN/DDCN=SD-7464+65730+2 ›

The song, "Riki Tiki Tavi" appears as the 15th track on "Donovan's Greatest Hits," available from CD Now. › I expect you to be a regular reader of "Powerssound" henceforth. Thanks for asking. ›

Hau Kola, Thank you supporters. The decision to move in the Tribal building belonged to the people of the Lakota Nation. The move was spiritual and well organized to deter any injury causing conflicts. Tonight is the second night we are in the Tribal building. The situation is not as critical as it seems. Today at 10:00 AM, two agents of the FBI met with us in the council chambers throughout the day. The purpose was to remit the nine demands of the grassroots people:
