Don't Read Me First

G21 INSIDER

ROCK STEADY

Publisher's Note

New York - 17 February, 1999: Swati was definitely All That and a good way for me to begin my developing a social life in New Yawk.

I think I'll go back to Arlene Grocery again. Knowing my pal, Larry Kefferstan, that's An Inevitable. Because he's a musician, I know I'll hear a lot of good music here in The City That Created Ambition (as NYU says.)

Meanwhile, we have other fish to fry. I should tell you about our celebration of Chinese New Year (The Year of the Rabbit) in Chinatown, or our consequent trip to celebrate Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) in Tribeca. But I think those are stories for other times. You come to this page to learn a bit about me, but a lot about what's up with the new Edition. So I'll meander there.

My design harangers, ROBIN MILLER & DIAMOND D. are all over me to drop the frames and go with tables. I'll get around to that, I suppose. But I would love to hear what you readers think about the new "framed" look. Send me some e-mail with a yea or nay on this, okay?

Another site made on a Macintosh In less than 30 days, this Internet incarnation of my magazine turns three years old. As you know, most magazines have a hard time continuing to exist.

Most of the Internet magazines which were around when the GENERATOR 21 started are now defunct. But for 156 weeks we have continued to put out. I'm proud of that. I'm also proud of the exclusive interviews we have produced, and the major issues we've covered.

Most of all, I'm proud of the calibre of writers we have managed to exhibit on this Web site. The pay is meagre here, since I'm not Daddy Warbucks, but the writers have stayed with me --- most of them for years --- because of our dedication to online excellence.

The New York Times reports this week that one of our competitors, SLATE (a Microsoft product), decided yet again to rejoin the Web and not charge their subscribers. This is a good thing. What were those people at Microsoft thinking? Why go to SLATE when you can get quality content like The World's Magazine, SALON, and SUCK for free? Welcome back, Michael Kinsley!

ABOUT THIS EDITION:

We have EIGHT all-new features for you. Your most hit column, DAY ONE has a double feature this week. KEVIN CAREY, courtesy of the U.K.'s ABILITY magazine, gives us advanced publication on his piece about the sacking of England's soccer coach GLEN HODDLE, and then MARK OSTROWSKI, a G21 Irregular, looks at the latest developments in the PACO CAO saga. Both pieces are must-reads, in my opinion. FAX NIKITA is updated by TERRY TERRIAN, from California, and LADYB, from Georgia. HOUSE OF CARDS has new Jokes of the Day. Who loves ya', Baby? as Kojak used to say...

Thanks for coming back this week.

We're glad you're here. We have a lot to offer this (and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.

WHY?

Because we like you...

Be Good to Each Other,
Rod
