Photo of Warren Buffett.G21 WORLD HQ - When doing what we prefer, which is pick a person who indisputably made the world a better place to live, this choice was inescapable. Not only did this man exemplify the best in altruism but made himself a symbol against greed. After we polled our staff writers and the Mailing List Membership for nominees for our "Person of the Year 2006," we definitely reached the conclusion that the era of Readership Polls at this publication had come to an end, though. This is our last.

Yeah, we know we said that last January, too. But this time it sticks.

Let the Games conclude!

Image of a small globe encased in a larger gridded globe. The first person to write in with a "Person of the Year" nomination was Cheryl N of West Fairlee, VT, USA. She wrote:

Hi Rod

This is much better than trying to deside which rotten rat is the worst.

Hands down, my choice this year:Muhammad Yunus

I choose Muhammad Yunus because he has shown the world that even a tiny amount of money can make a huge difference for good and empower both the giver and the receiver.

I MUST have a second choice this year. Warren Buffett

I must mention this man in whose factory my sister worked for years. He too has shown the world, especially the corporate world, a different way of life. I hope his personal frugality and public generosity will cause many of the the world's corporate leaders to invest in life as he has done.

Thanks for giving me two choices. Surely we need two good guys to counter 10 bad ones.

:-)chn

Image of a small globe encased in a larger gridded globe. From our writer MPHUTHUMI NTABENI, of Port Elizabeth, SOUTH AFRICA, we received:

Best

  1. Treat Action Campaign (TAC) for wining free AIDS treatment campaign for citizens of SA.
  2. Gates Foundation for doubling their efforts of fighting disease in Africa.
  3. South African Government for being on target in providing clean water for all its citizens.
  4. My fiancé for loving me all these years.
  5. Generator 21 for providing us a platform to breathe in an insane world.

Image of a small globe encased in a larger gridded globe. Finally, BRAD BALFOUR of New York, NY, USA, sent us these nominations:
person of the year
JAMES BROWN
not only because he picked christmas to go
but that he gave us the present of funk for this year, the future and for the last 40 years.
for such simple music he defined a sound and genre--hip-hop

b

or maybe

SADDAM HUSSEIN

he got his and was stupid enough to play into those idiots' hands. Of course their act of taking him down has ultimately or will ultimately take themselves--not just the Bush hunta but the entire Republican usurpers--down totally once 08 rolls around.

EDITOR'S COMMENT:

And that was that.

None of the rest of you wanted to play this year. So it goes.

So why did I choose Buffett for our cover - other than what I said in the introduction?

Mr. Buffett also fits my inclination and preference to choose someone who both shows compassion for others and contributes toward the general good in the world. His frugal lifestyle, as Cheryl points out in her e-mail, is so contrary to most corporate moguls as to be eccentric. Eccentric and exemplary. That someone who ranks among the world's wealthiest people should have his unique philosophy about capital is impossible to ignore.

If anyone should be the final Person of the Year for this publication, Mr. Buffett's largesse to the betterment of the planet makes him peerless. - RA
