G21 INSIDER

Publisher's Notes

SAN FRANCISCO - 28 June, 1998: Being a web publisher means, that even after taking a one year moratorium on such endeavors, you eventually need to do some "face time" at your industry tradeshows. People might otherwise assume that you went under.

As part of my re-emergence into the mix of this industry, I decided it was time to cover the Web Design and Development '98 conference being sponsored by Web Conference LogoMiller Freeman, Web Techniques, and Web Review. Throughout this week, you'll find my impression in our G21 NEWS column here and in my "'Net Publishing" column in the "Internet" section of Suite101. Please feel free to send me your comments at either venue.

But tradeshows and this industry are not all that is on my mind this week. Coincidentally, many of the thoughts inspired by the WDD '98 conference tended to converge with events going on in the non-internet world this week. I think specifically of AT&T's dramatic announcement that it intended to take over cable provider TCI. This was not only a wake-up call for the stumbling "Baby Bells," it was also notice to the rest of the world that "covergence" is a phenomenon whose time has come and which will change the way we all communicate. In the first part of my three-part article, I encourage you to the follow the link to Sun Microsystem's Jakob Nielsen's site, and the text of his presentation at the conference, because I find much of what he has to say about the future of the internet compelling.

Finally, this has been a week where I've tried to balance the successes here with the frustrations.

One of my largest frustrations has been the lack of recognition for the fine team of writers here. I feel that, bar none, this is the strongest roster of contributors this magazine has ever fielded. So I'm a bit frustrated that there are writers here which many of you are ignoring. I've tried every incentive I can think of to have you give them a look, all to little avail. So this week, especially, I'd also like to encourage each of you to take the time to visit our TALKBACK form and let me know what works for you here, what columns you would like to see continued, and which ones you can live without. It will only take about 30 SECONDS. So please, please, let us know what you think.

IN THIS EDITION: The second member of our Sports team, "KO" Olson is back with commentary on the NBA draft, and another look at baseball..... THOMAS HART's TABLOID HART column has the skinny on the CyberMom "Elizabeth," the Orlando Sentinel, and who "Baby Sean's" mother might really be.... And we'll have more great features on Tuesday and Wednesday.... So come back soon!

We're glad you're here. As you can see from the nav' bar to our upper left, we have a lot to offer this(and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.

WHY?

Because we like you....

Be Good to Each Other,
Rod
