Photo of Janine Turner. DUBLIN, IRELAND - It was 1959. The National Council for The Blind of Ireland gave my visually impaired mother a wireless. It was our first radio. At the time my contemporaries were clued in to the highlights of Radio Luxemburg and the Light Programme. But, always one to live in the past, I had a preference for the folk programmes on Radio Eireann. My adrenalin was really let loose by the prologue to one in particular:

The rick is thatched
The fields are bare,
Long nights are here again.
The year was fine
But now 'tis time
To hear the ballad-men.
Boul in, boul in and take a chair
Admission here is free,
You're welcome to the Rambling House
To meet the Seanachi.
The Seanachi was, of course, Eamon Kelly... MORE

Text Graphic: 'Recommended Daily Requirement - I'm for Peace, Too'.

by STUART ALTMAN

NEW YORK, NY, USA - I love all these Hollywood celebrities who have been getting together and announcing they are "For Peace." I guess walking around Tinseltown saying you are "For War" just doesn't land you those A roles. I also guess a lot of these celebrities didn't come up with this "For Peace" movement on their own. They probably had to check with their agent first who recommended it because of all the free publicity. After all who is not going to like someone who is "For Peace"? It reminded me of an election I saw where a Sheriff ran a commercial that he was "Against Crime." Unfortunately simplistic sayings like "I'm against crime" don't end the crime problem if you do not have a sensible plan to back it up. The same could be said about being "For Peace" ... MORE

by ROD AMIS

NEW ORLEANS - 25 December, 2002: For Christmas, I cleaned my monitor screen and the box itself, thinking about how well My Darling has served me this last two years. It was time to show her some love. When my friend Matt noticed that I still used the label "Macintosh Hard Drive' on my desktop, he said: "Now there's your problem right there! You don't show your computer enough love. You haven't even given her a name."

I'd never thought about naming my computer. I don't name my pens, after all, even though I'm known to have a fetish for nice pens. Bending to peer pressure, I named the drive "Enemy Crusher". I've always put that Quicktime clip from the film, "Conan the Barbarian" on every computer I've owned, including this one, so it seemed fitting at the time. But while cleaning My Darling, and thinking about the adventures we've had, in Bermuda, in London and Belgrade, Manhattan and now New Orleans, I decided that she needed a better name. I decided to call her Victoria. Veteran Mac users know that our computers talk to us when there is an alert. It's almost a joke among us that she often starts out: "It's not my fault ... " I long ago decided that the voice I preferred was Victoria. So now My Darling has a name to match her voice... MORE

by BOB POWERS

MARIETTA, OH, USA - When Rosemary Clooney lost her fight with lung cancer at the end of June, no one knew that another album existed. Now that album, "The Last Concert" (Concord Records) has been released. It provides a fitting goodbye to one of the most charming and talented singers in the history of show business.

Rosemary grew up Maysville, Ky., near the banks of the mighty Ohio River. She and her sister Betty were hired to perform on the powerful radio station, WLW, and those shows proved to be their gateway to show business. They toured with popular bandleader Tony Pastor, but Betty grew tired of the touring required of musicians and went back home.

Rosemary, possessing one of the most distinctive and warm voices of the twentieth century, became a best-selling solo act, which led to a career in motion pictures. Her role in "White Christmas" became one of the best musicals Hollywood ever produced... MORE
