| RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: I read Radio Raheem's article, "A Just Cause", with a bit of sadness. I felt bad for his (in my opinion) limited insight into the "layering", diversity and inner group divisions among both Afro-American and non-Afro-American peoples, Robert Jensen's patronizing (In My Humble Opinion) apology for his "white privilege", and the "two wrongs will make it right" fix Radio R advocates as a cure for the disparities in opportunities, between Afro-American and non-Afro-American persons.... ED CANTARELLA "A Tight End Game"
RDR 06.08.00: ROD AMIS on "The Invisible Poor." RDR 06.12.00: RON DIENER looks to the future in "Jobs, Microsoft & The Net" RDR 06.13.00: RADIO RAHEEM argues that Black reparations is "A Just Cause." RDR 06.14.00: AL DUNSMUIR on the rise of violence in Europe and "Greece's International Obligations." LOOKING FOR A PREVIOUS "RDR" Essay? Visit our complete ARCHIVES. DAY ONE: Clinton's support for a more cohesive Europe has been sensible. It might just result in lower American involvement in the European military theatre; it might save some money. Nonetheless, we have gained the impression that he understands the broader point, that only Western Europe can absorb former Soviet Bloc states and make them prosperous enough to be stable.... KEVIN CAREY "AACHEN" CARTOONS BY GASPIRTZ: A droll sense of humor, a twist of fate. OLIVER GASPIRTZ. PLANETARY MADNESS: Gemini not only sees at least two sides of a situation, Gemini can also be at least two sides of a situation. Embrace duality; raise an eyebrow at duplicity. Decision-making breeds during the season of the Twins as if to taunt, tease and otherwise screw-with the dialectical inclinations of this sign. Seize the Gemini energy for versatility, adaptability and landing on your feet...JENNIFER BLUE "JUNE, 2000" POWERSSOUND: The new album opens with a lush arrangement of the title song, which was first heard (I think) during Hollywood's Golden Age of the movie musical. Backing Rosemary is a superb group of seven musicians, including guitarist John Pizzarelli and Clooney's long --time pianist and arranger, John Oddo. Gary Foster is heard frequently throughout the album with his excellent tenor sax solos.... "Rosemary Clooney Has Done It Again!" BOB POWERS VOX POPULI: From Darryl C, Hershey, PA, USA:
....Assuming that Mr. Dunsmuir is entirely correct in ascribing the motives of these young women solely to scene, i.e., the one-dimensional aspect of Southern Spanish life how shall we then account for the fact that most of the people who live in Southern Spain do not from time to time invite their friends out for tapas and sangria and later murder them? Life in Southern Spain is no more one dimensional than is life lived in any other country on this dirt ball we call earth.

Taming the Wild Web - Part 1DOUGLAS MC DANIEL
"I think consumer still feels like it's a 'Wild West' scene," says Noah Eckhouse, CEO of TrailBreaker.com, a URL with a convenient westward twang that reviews and recommends shopping sites for consumers. "There are still some perilous trails," he says, "sites that are shaky in terms of their navigability, pursuit of quality and breadth of service." Meanwhile, the emergent Internet institutions are making promises to the regular guy "settler" to hang in there, because help is on the way.
"Over the next few years, we're going to be 'settling' cyberspace, making it more hospitable to normal folks," announced the online brochure for PC Forum 2000, a conference of luminaries and e-business leaders that WIRED has described as "The Sundance Film Festival of the Internet." Speakers at the event last spring included Microsoft president and CEO Steve Ballmer; Richard Bressler, chairman of Time-Warner Digital Media; and Kevin O'Connor, chairman and CEO of DoubleClick.
Letters from Chechnya (4)RENDT GORTER
The small but busy hospital was immaculate. Anderbek, the doctor in charge, welcomed us graciously into wards where every visitor was made to remove shoes before entering. Yes, he remembered me from when MERLIN had rebuilt his burnt-out hospital in 1996 - even the temporary latrines we had built then were still in place. The other doctors working at the clinic crowded into the small room as we began the routine question session. Like elsewhere in Chechnya, doctors and nurses forced from their usual workplaces had congregated where it was still possible to work. No, of course they could not charge for treating the many patients, but they were nevertheless looked after with food and accommodation by the grateful community.
WORLD HISTORYROD AMISPeople who know me and my "fans" can now be divided into two classes. The first group glibly considers me a professional whiner and believe I just need to the "snap out of it." They fit the typical American mode of denial which I have castigated before: the people who believe "everything will turn out for the best," "all things happen for good reasons," and other such homilies easily tossed to the suffering so that one does not have to admit that there IS tragedy in life. Many of the people in this first group, had they lived in the Germany of the second quarter of the last century, would be among those saying, "But I didn't know!" |
