| MEMOIRS OF THE INFORMATION AGE: Beginning next week my ruminations on the nature of the Information Age and its affects on our lives move here exclusively. In a way, that seems fitting. Much of what I have to say, and what we should be concerned about, does not fit the normal commercial/corporate model... ROD AMIS "Welcome to The Future"
DAY ONE: There is over-capacity in the European automobile market; prices are falling and the mean time between faults is increasing. There are some who will always want a new car every year but others are finding that they can hang on for another 10,000 miles without crippling repair bills. For various reasons which bore me rigid, simply because they have been rehearsed throughout my adult life without any sign of their being addressed, the British are now facing the possibility of losing a substantial chunk of the mass manufacturing market.... KEVIN CAREY "CARS" CARTOONS BY GASPIRTZ: A droll sense of humor, a twist of fate. OLIVER GASPIRTZ. MY GLASS HOUSE: I'm amused at times that some people, out of a voyeuristic tendency, read this column first. It seems that self-revelation is the wave of the day. But how many, like my friend Darryl, recognize how much I conceal by being self-revelatory? It's call "sleight-of hand." What I show you distracts you from the real story. That is what Magick is all about.... ROD AMIS "The Escape Artist" VOX POPULI: FROM Con R., (No City Provided,) Northern Ireland:
I found Dan deMortel's article on the death of Robert Hamill and its aftermath extremely well written, thourough, and remarkably low key which, of course, enhances it's credibility. You might wish to attatch an addendum to the effect that a lawyer who has courageously taken on some of Rosemary Nelson's cases (Garvaghy Road I'm sure of, the Hamill case I'm not), Padraigin Drinan, has experienced the same threats and harrassment from the RUC that Rosemary reported, along with at least two attempts on her life. In spite of this the British Government and the NIO refused to extend protection to her as an important person known to be at risk, until international awareness and outrage made Downing Street reconsider.

How I Came to Love the BombRADIO RAHEEMLet's see now: in the Nuclear Club we have added Israel, China, India, Pakistan and North Korea.
Meanwhile, the Republicans in our own USA Congress tells us that we don't wannah sign the Non-Proliferation or Comprehensive Test Ban Treaties because we are more focused on putting up an already-discredited "Star Wars" Anti-Ballistic Missile system that most scientists say just won't work. Am I missing something here? Or do I smell pork?
City Lights & CivilizationROD AMIS
One of my favorite film scenes is from Charlie Chaplin's City Lights. The Little Tramp has made a rich friend who, unfortunately, only recognizes him when he (the rich friend) is very drunk. During one of their encounters, the rich man and the Tramp are driving down a road of the city. The Tramp gets very agitated about the rich man's driving and exclaims: "Hey! Watch out for that bus!.... Hey! watch out for that truck!" and finally, "Hey! Watch out for your driving!" The rich man turns to him, nonplused, and says: "Am I driving?" (It's an old chestnut, reworked many times.)
