The answers follow.
From Lehnert R., Fountain Valley, CA, USA:
1 - It seems fresh, alive but not overly cutesy and confusing -- I can still find my way around.
2 - 2002 will be more of the same -- the more things change the more they remain the same.
The "War on Terrorism" will end the way the Vietnam War should have ended long before it did -- we will declare victory and go home. No one will dispute our declaration because the ones who could dispute it don't really care what we declare; they got what they wanted -- rid of us.
All this talk about "loss of naivete" is just that, talk. Read back in US history and it has all happened before:
- War of 1812 when our capital was attacked, the White House burned and we realized that those big oceans didn't really make us totally safe.
- Civil War which yanked the covers off our deep divisions along social and economic lines, not just racial lines but we were soon right back to exploiting anybody and everybody who would stand still long enough to be...
- Spanish American War when we took non-contiguous territory even as many said we should have taken more, Cuba specifically, and the supposed "maturity" of the USA in the world turned out to be just a manifestation of what we of European descent had been doing to the aboriginal people of the Western Hemisphere for a couple hundred years or more.
The list could go on but I believe you see my point -- the more things change the more they remain the same.
Do I think the world in general and the USA is going to hell in a hand basket? Of course not, we will muddle through even as so many wring their hands because things are "so awful."
3 - Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General. He has arguably the most difficult and thankless job imaginable yet he seems to really be trying to make things better or at least prevent things from getting worse. Of course he isn't perfect! No one in that job can do it right! Annan does a "good-enough" job so that international dialog and conversation continue. With that we still have hope that some semblance of responsibility will be displayed between nations, at least once in a while.
From "Diamond D." Middletown, CT, USA:
1 - yes, but you need a new masthead...I have attached several for your purveyance. [NOTE: Diamond D is responsible for the new look of the G21 masthead.]
2 - 2002 will be like totally crazy insane y'all. It's gonna bust out everywhere. Watch out! (in a good way of course)
3 - I nominate the editor. He is offcially my person of the year even though I haven't seen him since the inauguration of satan himself, back in january. Seems like yesterday don't it?
peace!!
From Lionel R., Los Angeles, CA, USA:
1 - The type seems cleaner, clearer, and that's good.
2 - I hope 2002 will be OK despite the abundance of evidence the world is being led into World War III by a half-wit. 3 - I would nominate God, but there's not much evidence she exists. She's too busy blessing America, I guess.
From Hideo T., (No City Provided,) JAPAN:
1 - I am sorry to say that I dislike your new cover design. Why ? just feeling.
2 - Nothing so special. Just live happily and peacefully.
3 - None.
From DC, Tampa Bay, FL, USA:
1 - I like it. Is better. Was never a fan of the old design. (But was too polite to tell you)
2 - Hope to hell it is better for you and for me
3 - Mr. (drum roll please) Rod Amis hisself. Survival against all odds is a trait I admire.
From D.A. B, (No City Provided,) THAILAND:
And the person of the year is.....Goran Ivanisavic!! The winner of Wimbledon from the long suffering country of Croatia. And so there ya have it. My thoughts and feelings on the coming year are the same as they are any year....it will come an go much too quickly, and in an increasingly disheartening way.
From Carl V., Alexandria, VA, USA:
1 - It's your cover, you can do what you like. I read your e-zine for the words.
2 - I expect 2002 to be just more of the same from this year. Except we'll be much more conscious of inconveniences, like beefed-up airport security, and even more security at sporting events and the like.
3 - Person of the Year: New York Mayor Rudolf Giuliani.
From Mark J., Jacksonville, FL, USA:
1 - I think your cover samples of the article run a bit too long. You should try to keep them to one paragraph. That's enough to know if we want to read more.
2 - I'm worried for 2002 because I think we're just seeing the beginning of a new type of troubles.
3 - Nobody.
From Margarita L., Berlin, GERMANY:
1 - The design of your magazine is very good and always interesting. I just wish you would use less pictures because of the time it takes the cover to come up.
2 - Perhaps in 2002 Americans will decide that they are part of the world instead of continuing to try to either dictate to others or act so selfishly. I hope this will be true.
3 - Because of what you have in your Web I would hope that you would choose some person who stands for a better world.
From Bob P., Marietta, OH, USA:
1 - The new design is the best one yet. Making it easy to find one's favorites serves the readers well.
2. I see little chance of a new year any improvement on the one departing. Personally, 2001 turned out to be a near disaster. That's why I'm pessimistic.
3. Person of the Year? Rosemary Clooney, who keeps on keeping on. She's remarkable.
