RDR Logo. Thanks for The Love - Part 2 - I'm blaming it on solar flares. That bombardment of ionized gases that are lighting up the skies this weekend probably had a lot to do with my thinking it was time to close up shop. Then there is the fact that if you lived in some areas here on the East Coast today, G21 was down, the New York Times was down, so were the Washington Post and LA Times, not to mention the e-mail server I depend upon. Oh-oh! Cosmic Message?

That gave me a lot more time to think. I certainly didn't like being cut off from the G21 by outside forces, so why should I like not being able to find it because of my own decision?

I had the chance to talk about the possibility with a couple more friends, too. LLOYD MORCOM, who has just signed on here, thought it would be a tragedy to see it end, but also understood the vicissitudes of indigence.

One friend in California said: "But wouldn't you also be walking away from the most significant community in your life? Wouldn't that be hard?" Spot on!

And my friend and G21 alumnae JENNIFER BLUE wrote: "... G21 is a significant expression of your life force, isn't it?"

That's true, too.

The thrust of Jen's e-mail seemed to be that as long as I can do something I love this much, I should. IF outside forces, like slow-paying publishers, make my life so impossible I am not capable of going on, that's another matter.

That's very logical, of course.

So it seems logical that I should choose to continue to fight the good fight until the last moment it is in my power to do so. To repeat myself:

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the future of publishing is right here on the World Wide Web. In fact, in terms of freedoom and communication this medium may be our last, best hope. Right now it is one of the only mediums NOT controlled by corporate conglomerates. But that can change. It may change if AOL Time Warner, AT&T or News Corp have their way.

But right now it's still open. It's still a frontier where tiny sites like this one, supported out of one guy's hip pocket have a chance.

You know what? I would give my eye-tooth (already lost the other one) to stay here and fight. I don't think those bastards deserve to take over this last frontier.

So this could be a demonstration of pure cussedness flying in the face of reason. But, as Ken Kesey once wrote: "Never give an inch!"

IF the conglomerates are to take over this medium -- as they have newspapers, radio and television -- it should not be because we gave it to them without a fight.

The list of stories they've published which they themselves have admitted months or years later were pure propaganda and exercises in acting as the Mouthpieces of the powerful is as long as my arm. That alone is incentive to keep their feet to the fire and leave room for other voices.

See you next week!

WEB SITE PICK OF THE DAY: WATER. We can't live without it, but we just don't think much about it. People on this planet who can't get it do. Farmers do, too. This is a good Web site to help you get your mind right about water. Go there now. The World's Water.
