COVER -> RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT
LOVED BY CATS - How many people get "CARE" packages from cats? Not many, I figure. But that's exactly what happened to me this week, according to what I was told by my friends Barb and Rich, out in California.
Reilly, Ace of Spies and Fudge Ripple (known as simply Reilly and Ripple, for short,) have sent me a number of packages, cards, and missives over the years. I have found this extraordinary, as most cats tend to disdain people and care less than bat quano about our species.
On the other hand, R & R and I have known each other for a number of years now. I was their cat-sitter when their mother was in the international division of a multi-national and spent nearly six months of each year traveling abroad.
There are photographs of Reilly draped over the top of the monitor of my old computer while I worked. This is unusual because, for many years, much like myself as a child, he would hide from anyone entering Barbara's house. Not me. For some reason he decided that I was his pal.
This could be bothersome at times, frankly, because --- if he got bored with my constant pecking away at that keyboard --- he might decide it was time for us to play and swat at my hands. Cats are like that.

And, oh yes! they sent me smoked oysters, too. A favorite of mine I'd forgotten.
As most readers probably know, cats have a reputation for humbling human beings, unlike dogs who make us feel we are gods. Thus it is a continuing surprise to me that Reilly and Ripple go out of their way to exhibit affection for me.
I understand, certainly, that I was a major influence on their formative years. I was often called upon to clean up their vomit, give them medicine when they were ill (and fought me like banshees to resist receiving same,) and often soothed them when they were distressed. And, yes, I would even deem to stroke and pet them --- something I refuse to do for most people.
Still....
I can now, in my dotage, admit that I tend to be "finicky" myself. Like a cat. There are animals I simply don't take to. There are some cats, dogs, birds, etc., I want kept as far away from me as possible. This was not the case with R & R. Bear in mind, though, there are also some people I'd prefer kept as far away from me as possible.
When you consider the billions of individuals of the various species which inhabit our planet, it should not be surprising that many of us our incompatible.
Nonetheless, I have to pause and wonder that I should recieve mail from cats. CATS!
