A Brief History of Generator 21
Dragana Viconovic

Rod AmisOnce upon a time and not so long ago, there was a man by the name of Rod Amis. As a young boy he was deeply fascinated by the life and achievements of Alexander the Great.

What he had learned from Alexander was that each person can have a dream to follow as long as he or she have guts to keep on dreaming. Yet unlike Alexander, Rod never wanted to conquer the world, but to change it and unite it.

For him, the most powerful weapon was WORD. People who create words and who share the same beliefs – the writers, are mighty warriors with the strength of Alexander’s armies capable to change for the better the way we think, the way we live and the way we perceive the world.

So he chose to become a professional writer (http://www.atlanticfreepress.com/home/profiles/userprofile/rod.html)
and follow his dream.

His weapon become the G21: World’s magazine which he used to publish for 17 years at first as paper journal that was US mailed delivered (snail-mail) to a list of dedicated subscribers, then as the BBS E-zine and since March 1996 as the WWW publication.

For those who know and who are willing to admit it, Rod Amis was the longest blogger on the Internet, because the 'zine and blog have had the same URL since its creation on the WWW.

His blog Don't Read Me First, later renamed My Glass House, was a journal about his life and travels, his “soul journey” which he used to call Heijira and has been requested many times by his readers to be turned into a biography.

Over the years, Rod Amis gather around the G21 writers from all parts of the world.

They wrote about some very important social, political environmental, religious and cultural issues, covering all the topics from  music and film to wars and disasters.

Some of  the G21 writers, under Rod’s guidance, achieved successful careers as recognized, rewarded and published authors.

He had the courage, integrity and chastity to report of the subjects most other journalist avoided, fearing to criticize the official politics often hidden in the shadow of powerful corporations, hereditary wealth and lobbyists. Rod published articles about Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Serbia, Rwanda, South America, Near East crisis. Most of those words were much latter confirmed to be truth by other media.

Rod Amis never hid his sympathies for socialism, always concerned for the life of simple people and the wrong legacy we are leaving to the future generations.

He believed that people of different parts of the globe, races, religions and cultures can live together in peace in a world based on mutual goals, understanding and tolerance. G21 was his family of the same thinking writers, trying to spread the words of reason trough out the globe.

We, his friends whose lives were deeply touched by his professionalism, goodness and humanity, decided to continue his life work and keep the G21 family together.

Please, feel free to join us whoever you are and where ever you live.

As our dear friend used to say:

Work like you don't need the money
Love like you've never been hurt
Dance like no one is watching
